Rubble (EP)

I started writing the music for this EP after seeing the shocking images of the bombed-out theater in Mariupol, which became a symbol for the child victims of violence, terrorism and war. The music of Rubble is rather dark and dissonant, but it also radiates hope at times, with the last chord of 'Submerged' as the highlight, the only major chord in the whole EP.

'Besieged' starts rather dark with a swelling drone sound, and the piano introduces the lullaby theme - which can also be heard on the last track 'Mariupol Lullaby' as a solo piano version.  Then the accordeon starts improvising on the melody, later joined by the piano.  Both instruments playing unisono most of the time, gradually introducing more dissonance towards the climax.  Then the lullaby theme is repeated once more, this time with harmony from the piano chords.

'Rubble', the title track, introduces a moment of introspection.  A dark and haunting ambient sound, expressing feelings of sadness and acquiescence, beautifully voiced by the piano and the cello.

'Submerged' refers to the phenomenon of citizens taking shelter in an underground metro station during an air raid. The intro sets the scene of a cellist playing in the metro station, interrupting his or her playing to take shelter. In the background sirens and the impact of bombs. Then the piano and bass start the actual song, the cello introduces the main theme and then the trumpet takes over with an improvisation. Gradually the cello and the violin join to support the trumpet. The song grows to a climax with all instruments repeating the theme, and concludes with a major chord to leave the listener with a feeling of hope.

I have created this EP in memory of all children who have become victims of war.  Rubble, the title track, is dedicated to my late father, who passed away while I was working on this project. Mariupol Lullaby to my grandson Lou.  May he grow up in a world of piece and never be confronted with the atrocities of war.
